These rich and decadent truffles are great to make for a last minute dessert, or just for yourself to over indulge in. Either way, you can’t go wrong with a recipe that only calls for three ingredients.
Yield: About 30 truffles
1 package Oreos, or store-brand chocolate sandwich cookies
1 8oz package of cream cheese
1 12oz package semi-sweet chocolate chips
Before starting, I want to mention two important steps that will make this A LOT easier for you. Absolutely make sure the cream cheese is room temperature, unless you want a hell of a time mixing smashed cookies with hard cream cheese. Secondly, prior to dipping in chocolate, make sure to freeze the rolled-out truffles for 15-20 minutes, otherwise they tend to fall apart.
First, place an entire package of Oreos, or similar cookies, in a large zip-lock bag and crush until they are completely broken down into fine pieces. (You could also achieve this by putting them in a food processor, if you have one – I don’t so I used a rolling pin to crush the cookies.)
Next, toss in the room temperature cream cheese and mix until it is evenly combined with the crushed cookies. Make sure you don’t have chunks of cream cheese throughout the mixture.
Take the mixture in your hands and roll into evenly sized balls and place onto a wax paper or foil lined cookie sheet. (I made about 1 1/2 inch sized truffles and got 30 in total. You can make them smaller to get more depending on your preference.)
Once all the truffles are rolled out, place into the freezer for 15-20 minutes, or until they are somewhat firm to the touch.
Either using a double boiler, or microwave, thoroughly melt the chocolate chips. If using the microwave, make sure to heat in small increments, otherwise it’ll burn.
Place one truffle at a time onto a fork and dip into the melted chocolate. Make sure it is evenly coated and place onto the lined cookie sheet. (I used a spoon to cover the truffle while on the fork, then tapped the fork on the bowl of chocolate to get rid of excess chocolate.)
If you’d like, you can add chocolate sprinkles (Jimmies, around here) or crushed cookies on top after you dip each truffle. Or, you can let the chocolate harden, and drizzle white chocolate over the tops.
Even if you left these Oreo truffles as is, they are absolutely delicious; and the holidays are the perfect time to whip up a batch.
